Table top (melamine coating) TabletopChipboard core with melamine coating, white, smooth, matt. with real beech wood edge band (2 mm thick). The edges are double treated with a water and acid resistant, food-safe finish for optimal protection against dirt and stains. They are rounded with a 2 mm radius of curvature.Incidentally, our table tops offer superior quality on both sides. This means that you effectively get 2 tops in one: if the top side becomes marred after years of use, simply turn it over and you practically have a new table. You’ll love it, and so will the environment.Weight: approx. 28 kg (depending on design)Melamine tabletops are chipboards coated with a melamine resin layer. This melamine resin coating is made of a paper layer impregnated with synthetic resins, which is pressed onto the chipboard under heat. This process makes the boards durable and scratch-resistant. Melamine boards are supplied by the panel factory in large or medium formats (4.1 x 2.07 m or 2.8 x 2.07 m) and cut to size. Afterwards, an edge banding is glued on, which is made either from real wood or plastic.Real wood edge banding can be additionally lacquered to protect it from dirt (often multiple times, with light sanding in between to improve adhesion). A wood edge that is hand-lacquered multiple times, sanded between coats (and finally cleaned), is more expensive than a plastic or untreated wood edge, but it increases the durability and longevity of the tabletop. In general, melamine boards are a very affordable option that has proven excellent in everyday use.Melamine boards are mainly used in furniture or kitchen construction. There, we mostly see top and bottom surfaces or outside and inside surfaces, with only one side being visible. Therefore, the panel factory guarantees only one flawless side for inexpensive melamine-coated chipboards. If you purchase double-sided high quality, the melamine board can simply be flipped after many years of use, providing a like-new tabletop again—an additional purchasing argument in this age of sustainability.Melamine boards are not weatherproof and are only suitable for indoor use. For outdoor tables, such as garden tables (and matching garden tabletops), weather-resistant alternatives like HPL are required.Melamine tabletops have a specific weight of about 15.75 kg/m² at a thickness of 25mm.The thinner a melamine board is, the lighter it is, but the greater the likelihood that it will sag under heavy weight or when spanning too large a distance. If the melamine board is too thick, not only does the weight increase, but there is also a greater risk that the board will sag due to its own weight.
